It seems like it should be sort of a priority for the fediverse to create a high quality alternative to Facebook, which is one of the largest platforms out there, and probably what a lot of people think of when they think of "social media", and yet, the marketing and overall adoption of Friendica is simply abysmal, to put it bluntly.

After using VLC for over 15 years, I decided to explore a little more. I had no clue that it comes with thousands of internet radio stations on Icecast, as well as the ability to add all your podcasts into it (just need to find the link to your podcasts hosting service). I no longer use any streaming services (to me, they are criminal, plus they're full of ads and generally getting worse and more expensive every day)

I'm genuinely interested in people thoughts about the Fediverse because here in the UK it has massively stalled in 2025, like a lot of things. I am seeing way less posts from UK people and way less interaction and general use in fact. Most seem to have stopped social media use to be fair, and I know a lot of that is to do with my age (old fart here, 56 laps round sun and counting) but the numbers game look poor from my point of view. Do we think the Fediverse has a future now after useage appears to be going downwards? Is it a UK thing? (well I know the UK is weird but hey)

I see a lot of misinformation about bluesky here, so I want to address a lot of the talking points against atproto/bluesky.

I admin a Facebook group with just about 30k people in it. It used to be great, and over the past few years the enshittification has been too much. Lately there is an out of control Facebook AI bot posting constantly pissing everyone off that we can't seem to turn off. I only use FB for the group, and don't have their spyware - I mean, app - installed and wont. Admin abilities are severely limited on the webapp.

Let's say: - I am on instance A. - I browse on a community that is on instance B - a user from instance C post something on that community B.

I started to notice that my posts get no interactions at all and that a lot of communities seem to be empty. At first I thought that it's just the effect of Lemme. ee shutting down, but after checking some of the communities from my current alt account I started to notice that .Dev does not pull the latest posts and does not federate my posts.

You can still see lemm.ee for example on search results since the metadata was saved by it, you can see a snippet and the topic title but of course upon clicking you will hit a dead end since its been shutdown.

I want to build an app, in which you can subscribe or follow profiles or feeds from multiple platforms, including various fediverse platforms (lemmy, Mastodon, Friendica, etc), blogs, and others (no idea what else yet).

Inspired by this post by Ed Zitron on Bluesky, I wondered if Oracle would file for bankruptcy in the future, whether due to poor decisions, millions in losses in sectors that failed to meet their targets, the loss of lawsuits filed by users and/or customers, or other reasons.

I mean, we got Kbin, Lemmy, PieFed, NodeBB, stuff like that. What else do they have on the fediverse that's like that?

The Problem with the FediverseI have no issues with the way it is implemented, I have no issues with it at all. For context, I left Twitter to join the Fedi, and it has been great so far! I use Misskey for microblogging, PeerTube for uploading videos, and Lemmy for Reddit-style discussions. The Fediverse is amazing!Except, idk, for the fact that it is too fragmented? I hope I am using the right words. Like, the current instance I am on does not have support for communities, so i have to do it the hard way and mention @fediverse@lemmy.world so that I can post here. It's a good workaround, considering it doesn't have built-in support for communities. But my point still stands. It's not a Lemmy/PieFed problem. It's mostly a fediverse problem. Implementing communities for every platform would help the Fediverse. Not only does it solve discoverability/algorithm issues of the Fediverse (since now when you follow a community, you get all posts from that community), but also it would interconnect every platform (Misskey, PeerTube, Mastodon, etc.) Imagine you don't have to use your Lemmy account to check everything on Lemmy. Instead of creating channels in PeerTube, just post to an existing channel/community, and people subscribed to that channel/community can find you easily. I see this as an absolute win for everyone.I understand this would require collaboration between all developers of all software. I think this was asked by someone already, but I do wonder. I think it would be cool if my sister joined the Fediverse (but blocked NSFW content). She is a high school freshman, but I can’t have her join an instance where you must be an adult.

You might've heard that search sucks on software X... maybe software Y... definitely on software Z. The default one kind of sucks on NodeBB too, admittedly.

This applies to any of the microblogging software. Akkoma, IceShrimp, etc. I go to any Lemmy instance, big or small, and the up/downvote data and replies are basically all the same. The same goes for Peertube, and most services that aren't Mastodon and the gang. Why is this? Is it because of older design? Unexpected issues cropping up with scale? It seems to be such a big struggle over there, but for everyone else, it's whatevs.

I want to be part of the solution of the problems I see on Lemmy, that is why I opened my alt account at my current server to open new communities while fixing their issues.

This might be a client thing, but... I'm subscribed to several overlapping communities: !linux on one server, !linux on another, !linux on two others. Same with !lemmy, !commandline, and a couple other communities with the same topic and slightly different membership and/or focus.

There is a lot bluesky gets right, and a lot it gets wrong, the same is true with Activitypub.
