PieFed gets /r/random, like reddit used to have

submitted by

piefed.social/r/random

You'll get taken to a random community. Once you arrive there's a link at the top of the page to /r/random so you can just hammer away at that until you get somewhere that's the right combo of random and interesting.

There is also /r/randnsfw that takes you to a random nsfw communty if your instance has them.

Used to? Does reddit not have it any more?

I loved those. randnsfw was great as well, you never knew if you'd find happiness or go to be disturbed.

Taken out two years ago

I think that’s about when most of us left. So that tracks.

meanwhile reddit removes r/all - crazy timeline

Voyager has had this feature for a long time

It does? How do you use it?

Go on Search and select „random community“

Thanks. It seems to land on the same few comms for me. Do you get a new comm every time?

Well for me it does not even work today. I get no result.

Thats cool as fuck! It'll be nice when my client supports it ☺️

Looks promising indeed!

Oh sweet. Might try it again.

I've yet to even get the lemmy frontend successfully running for development. Maybe piefed will be easier

Should these be /c instead of /r in the links?

I opted for /r/ because there might be a community called 'random' one day.

The link https://piefed.social/r/random was a bit broken until just now, try again.

Why not just /random, then?

Yes might as well do that too.

Works for me on android, firefox.
Very cool, i like this a lot

Nice to hear :)

FYI I've added 'Random community' to the Communities menu, right at the end.

Cool, but how do I subscribe? Or can I?

It will redirect you to a random community, so it wouldn't make much sense to subscribe to it. The apps will likely add a button or menu somewhere for you to use it

Thanks! I'll be looking forward to that.

To a random community? Sure, click the link then hit follow.

Comments from other communities

Is there an easy way to access this via PWA?

Last item on the communities menu in the hamburger.

Very cool :3

but on mobile, for people who have subcribed to lot communities, they will have to scroll down a little. I think it can sit next to local/all community button :)

Let's wait a day or two, until the novelty wears off, then see if it still deserves a more prominent place.

Okay, and then, once settled, i will create a nice link for the weekly post on fediverse.

I dunno, but it would be great if we could turn it into an instance agnostic link. I will use threadiverse link. :)

Is this only on piefed.social or on all instances? I couldn’t see it in the changelog for 1.6.15.

It is not part of a formal release yet but any instance on the 1.6.x branch can git pull to get the latest code and it'll be in there.
