As a result, our instance https://lemmy.dbzer0.com/ got 625 new user registrations (of which 536 where accepted) in the past 24 hours! And the registrations are not abating even now. We still get like 10 new ones per hour!
I suspect this is probably the largest advertisement, for lemmy specifically, since the main reddit blackouts 1.5 years ago.

Besides smaller complaints (every instance has their issues). .world has gotten too large. Many people have suggested that it close its doors for now so other instances can catch up.
lemm.ee is a good general alternative to .world.
It should probably the default suggestion or selection now.
Having at least one mega instance is really good, in my opinion. Whether we like it or not, many people struggle with the idea of the fediverse and how to function inside it. If they didn't have to think about it initially it would help them and the fediverse. BlueSky and the AT protocol should never have happened IMO. But people prefer them because the experience is "better".

The occasional complaint I see is not enough that I've considered moving and I don't even remember what those were. But the great thing about the fediverse is that you can move if you want!

I find Heinz beans a bit watery. I prefer the supermarket own brands to Heinz... Branston's are much better and tastier, with a thicker sauce. Still, YMMV and all that jazz.
Oh, I forgot an annoying trivial issue: the Heinz cans don't stack up well (lock into place with one can on top of another).
That non stacking thing annoys the piss out of me haha. It's such a small thing and it's deliberate to make the tin look bigger but it just means they're taking up more space in the cupboard for lack of stacking or falling over if you do.
Also not a huge Heinz fan. Like they're not bad don't get me wrong but definitely agree on the watery-ness.
The most popular one here is probably Bachelor's which has a thicker, richer sauce though I'm fond enough of the Lidl own brand one. That is definitely partly down to price. They're ridiculously cheap and very decent with a fry especially if you warm them slowly to soften them.

It has felt GREAT at lemmy. Lot of content and great discussions. We don't NEED more people. Yes, more people bring more diversity and that will help a lot. The one downside for lemmy is that it doesn't have all the niche groups that reddit does but that takea time. Lemmy is maturing amazingly imo.
The typical ratio is 1:9:90, meaning only 10% are actively posting or commenting. The Lemmy numbers fit to that surprisingly well, although you would think a few more lurkers would at least vote sometimes (which Lemmy reports as active in the monthly stats). My guess is that the lurkers don't even bother to sign in.
First time I made an account I fd up the verification question (didnt even look), took me months to make an account again because I was annoyed I couldnt have that username on that instance because I did It wrong.

I switched fully over and am in the process of degoogling and de-microsofting my life. No more easy defaults of VS Code, back to custom configuring my emacs. No more surveillance, self-hosting and encryption. No more shitty windows gaming, Linux and Proton for gaming bliss!

Vscodium has been a very usable replacement for me. You lose some of the ms first party plugins (ssh being the most notable) but largely it just works otherwise.
I use this extension to get SSH support for VSCodium It works great!

With the advent of the steamOS console, you're actually correct! If it's anything like my deck it's trivial to launch it in desktop mode and use it like a normal linux desktop. This is the gateway to putting linux in front of bored kids everywhere.

Even so, hook up a steam desk to a monitor with a mouse and keyboard and that's a linux desktop, that's right now today.
I've been dual-booting for about 2 weeks now, and I've been spending so much time in Fedora Silverblue because it's just so nice. I mean, most of the shit I do is browser stuff, so I have no issues there. Most of the time I can get apps to work, but my only gripe is not being able to use NextDNS alongside Proton VPN like I did on my windows computer 😭. I just don't know how to get it to work, and idk how to revert my DNS settings in terminal back to default instead of NextDNS.
But like everything else is fine, and I can still do my schoolwork.

On a more serious note: I wonder if the year of Lemmy will never come. Constant de-federation and churn might splinter it again, much like distros did kinda splinter the Linux desktop.
There will never be "a lemmy". There's no canonical "lemmy" out there. There is only 1000 independent websites, sharing select content with select neighbours.
We either accept this, or we return to corporate social media.
I don't think defed has been that bad, and I think over time we'll get more features to avoid having to defed (aside from illegal content or spam).
Like users being able to block users and/or communities by instance, or admins being able to set default block lists for new users, or users being able to easily share block lists.
Not everyone wants the same flavor of the fediverse.
Yeah conflicting ideologies may lead to a splinter-net… but this also can be just a matter of an instance users taste. This is part of the federated nature of lemmy that allows this to happen.

I migrated from reddit today. Thanks to r/piracy post. So far it's amazing. I am using the Eternity app for Android which is the same as the Infinity app for reddit so UI is similar

No, we're all on lemmy.world and we're here, not fully defederated. You can get to most communities on dbzer0, it's just that specific /c/piracy community that is blocked on world.

Account Settings (*not* Profile), Import/Export Settings, Export to file then repeat with Import on new instance. It transfers subscribed communities and block lists, so if none yet then no need to bother. Edit: there is currently no way to transfer over your actual content (posts, comments, likes & dislikes) and DMs sent to your old account will not follow you over to the new. The only thing you can really do then is transfer your settings to help you start over more quickly in the new place.
For piracy, lemmy.dbzer0.com might be the best, for leftist politics definitely slrpnk.net, for science mander.xyz, and so many other themes but there's a ton of hidden factors there like uptime stats, stability via number of admins, etc.
For simplicity's sake: a USA general instance I highly recommend is Discuss.Online, or for European sopuli.xyz.

Hi. It is the two millionth day of September, give or take a few thousand.
I've noticed that every different social media medium/site has its own Eternal September moment. I think, optimistically, that we're still before that point. If we get popular and the general population arrives, it'll also attract the predatory ecosystem of state actors and corporate bullshit.
I think Lemmy and the Fediverse in general is resistant to that, but not immune. I expect an effort to create One Big Instance that most people use, or an oligarchy of large instances working together, like Microsoft and Gmail and co do with email.
Lemmy has a long way to go before eternal September to be sure. It's once people don't know individual commenters across the entire platform we might get there, but as is the regular users are unlikely to get drowned out anytime soon.

Announcement stands at a high number of downvotes. The people have spoken, the admins did not listen.
I don't think I've ever seen any other post with 2000 downvotes and -1000 overall score. Those numbers are really big. But at the same time LW has way too many users and communities on them so I can understand them not wanting to play legal games on top of that regardless of factuality. It's a free platform and changing instances is easy (as long you don't have communities to move).

Edit to add: on my instance there are communities that are hidden by default, but not blocked at all. If you subscribe to such a community, everything shows up like normal for you. It seems to me this is a better option for communities seen as controversial or problematic. And of course defederation is always an option when needed.

The main thing I heard about Bluesky is that it costs like $100 mill to run your own instance or something like that, so they only have one main instance for now. They technically have federation, but for all intents and purposes, it's just another centralized corporate service waiting to be enshittified.

If you need ones that don't have a high self discharge then yes. The black ones (pro) have a higher capacity but will self discharge in a few months.

From what I’ve read the sub got ban after mods took time to delete violent comments about DOGE employees. Their names got leaked, peoples started to say dumb shit, often violent. Musk threw a fit about it and Reddit banned the sub.
Making death threats is obviously a good reason for a ban but apparently the reason Reddit gave (unmoderated sub) was false as there’s screenshots of the post being actively moderated with plenty of deleted messages. But it’s those kind of posts with 18k comments so I guess it was moving too fast for the moderator team.
I might be wrong, I just read about that from the r/france post our refugees came from. I did not explored in detail as it’s on Reddit and I just don’t care 🤷🏻♂️

Yeah it's a bit the wild west here, you can say fuck and post about whatever you want, but there are also some intricate rules on some servers/communities but peopke are mostly very helpful. This place IMO is absolutely fantastic.

I make like 10 accounts before i found one that worked for me. Luckily i can log them all into sync for lemmy and switch between them when im doom scrolling so i can doom scroll the same content 10 times before bed!

But not .world or .ml? I got an account in both and I didn't know those places were disliked until I started getting automatic bans only for being in those instances.
Anyway, that's why Lemmy is so good, just figure out later where you wanna go. The first thing to really understand is that one Lemmy instance is similar to Reddit while another instance is also similar to reddit but all instances are independent of each other and Lemmy is not reddit at all.
You can have a Lemmy purely focused on sex stuff while another might be about painting or maybe another is owned by a church or a bakery. The Bakery might like the church and the sex stuff. The church one might only be federated to the bakery and painting one. Its not just that an instances can have many different channels, but each instance can have channels with specific focus. Or even an instances for your local diy business or a 18 year old who rally wants us to see what's in between his legs. Lemmy is definitely far from what reddit is.
Having to read through the entire lore of lemmy and get informed on all the instances and relationships between them seems like a nightmare. You make an account on one instances then after few days you get told that your instance is literally satan and you should switch to a different one. It's like with Linux distros. No mater which one you pick, you chose wrong.

It's defederated from the places I don't wanna see, and I mostly look through the All feed, not the local one.
The high drama is as hilarious as it is pathetic.
And like switching Linux distros, switching Lemmy instances means losing everything unless you have an external backup.

Hopefully at least half of them stick around; the MAU count is much more impactful in terms of post frequency and variety than the total number of users in general.
Every reddit shock, more people register on lemmy, as it's the only valid alternative, then around 10-30% of those stick around. The more reddit enshittifies, the more shocks it will experience until a tipping point is reached.

I think you're probably right about that. I've always said the next big migration will be when they turn off old.reddit, but perhaps they'll be wise enough to blanket ban links to all the largest Lemmy instances by that point.
Lemmy really needs to buy ads on Google. I know....Google is just awful.

There's still a lot of old, useful and informative posts on Reddit that I find via a Google search. It annoys me that whenever I find one of those posts, I have to go and edit the URL to be old.reddit instead of www.reddit otherwise it's so hard to use. Like, the useful thing is in the comments, but the comments are collapsed by default, so if you search for something you won't find it until you expand those comments.
If they get rid of old.reddit I think I'm going to end up using the wayback machine to get that old post rather than trying to use that horrible new reddit interface.
Agreed. New Reddit is terrible. I find having to flip to different pages to get to deeper replies particularly annoying.

This is interesting. I get the impression that some admin/mods truly don’t understand how the Fediverse operates. They ban one (or a few) instance name(s), but there are so many more that they might not even recognize as Lemmy links, which get past the radar.
At the same time, there are fears here that .world could become disproportionately powerful compared to other instances, due to its high user count.
So in a way, Reddit blocking traffic to .world while permitting links to other instances can benefit us all. Smaller instances gain users, which is an important step toward balancing things out and keeping any one instance from becoming too powerful. Thanks, Reddit!
(I recognize the irony of saying this while having a .world account. I wasn’t aware of its standing in Lemmy when I made it. I am also still learning the Fediverse myself and don’t know how to transfer my account to another instance yet.)

For a while I was reading and posting on Lemmy, but still going over to check things out on Reddit (without an account) because Lemmy just wasn't getting enough traffic to keep interesting posts popping up. I'm having to do that less and less these days.
Honestly I never have to do it unless I'm extraordinarily bored and have nothing better to do.

Even if they don't stick around they probably know that the days of reddit allowing stuff like piracy and rom resources is coming to a close, so even them just seeing lemmy as a fallback plan to keep in mind is a positive move in the long run.

It's not really the backup since last year, but the primary, but reddit won't let me shut down /r/piracy and the other mods who took over my top spot after reddit removed me still believe in reddit, so they refuse to leave and call lemmy still the backup.

Even myself, I have been sort of "out of" lemmy and I don't remember how tagging or linking instances works anymore. I find that quickstart entirely useless. How to create communities is already pretty self explanatory, as there is a button for "Create Community". The same goes for Search.
I think an image/infographic with things like "how to link users?", "how to link communities?", is much more useful, as there are no quick ways to find that out, i.e., no buttons.

Especially important to understand decentralization when it comes to topics like piracy. Unlike Reddit, a non-commercial Lemmy instance isn't going to be shut down by a CEO who is worried about how it might affect their ability to sell ads. But, admins can get threatened, they can get overwhelmed, they can get hit by a bus. It's good to know how how to find other communities on other servers, etc.

It's a bit of a mixed experience. Overall, federation has its benefits, but it also tends to encourage cliquish behavior among groups. Sometimes, entire servers get blacklisted for various reasons. Reddit has a lot of corners that don't violate its current ToS but are generally ignored by the community at large. These are NSFW spaces usually. In federation the ToS isn’t usually about pleasing the most people and pulling them into your platform, it's more about the ideals of your server admin team. That’s a good thing, I suppose. It’ll be interesting to see how things play out with Lemmy instances when Reddit bans porn.
Especially as many Lemmy instances don't want to host or moderate NSFW content. I don't blame them, but I'm also doubtful pornlemmy alone could handle the load (pun intended).
Having looked at the NSFW Lemmy instance, I 100% expect the Reddit refugees will try to host their own instances. Some of them. I also expect them to be defederated pretty quickly.

No, I think it's just me on my instance (that probably has the capacity for 1000+ active users) and the steady influx of suspicious accounts that pass the email verification and captcha and then either post nothing, or post adverts get banned/deleted and it goes on.
Mind you I don't really advertise the instance either. So that's likely why.
I suspect people coming from reddit don't understand the fediverse (I know I didn't when I first got here). So they go to the hosting instance and join there, not really understanding they can join any instance and then join the community (if not already on the instance).
Captcha and email verification are trivially defeated by bots. If just getting lurkers is a concern, try using a registration application form like we do. Do you at least see these lurkers as MAU? (i.e. just voting)
No. I see several genuine looking users that registered and did nothing (fine I guess). But there's a lot with very similar [HTML_REMOVED]@gmail.com. Some don't do anything and so far I've left them. Some are clearly posting advert crap and they get deleted as soon as I see it. Every now and then I just go through purge the rest that are clearly bot accounts.
If I was actually getting genuine active users I might look into making a form or otherwise making it difficult (not sure if mbin has that ability mind you). But seems I don't really get real users. Just me, posting and commenting all day.

You need to somehow get your url out. Usually if you're just "generalist" people don't see a big reason to register compared to something like lemm.ee. Also new servers have another issue is that one doesn't know if they'll be around long enough. We've lost so many small servers in lemmy when their admins discovered it was more trouble than it was worth.
Oh I know, I was responding to r00ty as to highlight that reg. application seems to work well as spam protection. I don't advertise so that I don't have to dedicate the whole server to lemmy, currently running multiple other things there aye aye

A landing page of sorts for small instances could be neat - a list of small instances welcoming new users, what their moderation policies are, software, philosophy of (de)federation, and other basic stuff.
It's easy to find the big ones, but for those looking for smaller instances they can be harder to find.
Thanks. I think at the time I made an instance (about a year and a half ago I reckon), there was quite a batch snapping up kbin/lemmy on every tld imaginable.
It's actually not a bad idea. "The front page of the threadiverse" so to speak. There are plenty of instance lookups out there, but they're generally self discovered. Something that helps match a user to a smaller instance cannot be a bad thing.
Having large instances is a good thing of course, especially for hosting larger communities. But, in order to remain fully independent, smaller instances that can be run truly as a hobby on affordable hardware are essential for the fediverse in my opinion.
I think it's also a bit utopian to expect everyone to make an informed decision about which small instance to sign up for right away. It could be nice to have a little overview ready for whoever has been using lemmy.world or some other big instance for a while, understands how the fediverse works, and wants to migrate to a smaller instance for some reason or another.
Personally I wasn't really sure where to go after Kbin.social, and my decision on Kbin.earth was pretty random. Happy with my decision though!
