I use a few social media platforms at the same time. I'm used to seeing the same things on each platform. That's how the internet has been for years - you read the same things on the same five sites.

Because of the nature of federation posts and comments on LemmyNSFW communities will live on basically forever. However the photos and videos will likely be lost. Some were links to external media and will stick around, some may be cached. But most photos and videos that were uploaded directly to the instance will break when the server fully goes down.

I am the admin of the newly created instance https://indie-ver.se/, and it's been going great. But as I was looking to migrate all images to a S3 bucket, I noticed, the images take up more space than I had anticipated, a bit over 1 GB. And I know for a fact, that there has not been many images uploaded to this instance directly.

Ie similar to how Lemmy allows users to create instances that are federated with each other, only this Discord alternative's instances wouldn't federate with each other.

This is probably a long shot, but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in helping me make a gamified Spanish vocabulary web application.

Ghost and Flipboard are federated, so newsletters and blogs that publish there automatically create activitypub messages. It would be awesome if we could have some way to automatically add posts to a community for which posts would be relevant. For instance, if I were to move my the community for my city's soccer clubs to piefed, it would be awesome if I could create a post automatically for the local coverage here on the fediverse publishing on ghost. I'm not certain what the best way to do that would be -- allowing communities to follow other actors would mean we could have posts straight from ghost and flipboard, plus we could aggregate up various communities into multi communities (I could run one for both the men's and women's sides for all the local soccer clubs and aggregate them up into a ${city}_soccer multicommunity, and would allow us to do the migration from the legacy lemmy community cleanly (since I could follow the old lemmy community and see posts made in the old community), and would allow me to follow bot actors who post from federated sources like bluesky (for instance via brid.gy) or twitter (for instance via sportsbots.xyz), but the existing rss communities proposal would probably also make sense, especially if it allows us finer granularity on separating posts based on topic (for instance, the local newspaper sometimes combines different teams into the same rss feed, but I would want to have separate communities). It's also possible a bot is the best solution, but taking api traffic seems like an inefficient way to handle this.

Maybe I'm seeing shadows in the clouds, but it seems like AI means a lot more people have been building open source tools.

I really enjoy retro aesthetics , especially the Frutiger Aero style. I'm also really interested in old macOS Aqua 's design language and Y2K aesthetics.

I tried finding a FOSS app that I could use to use my phone as a mouse (all options for this seem really shady IMO) and Google's "AI overview" recommended the app "Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse". Seemingly, because it has a (mostly empty) Git repo with typical folders. I tried entering the search term into Copilot on my work computer and got the same result, Copilot also gave a little speech on why the app was FOSS. Only when told there was no source code in the repo did Copilot backtrack and say it wasn't open source (and later having it listed as not recommended because of an unknown origin [eventhough it's in the Google Play store...]).

As suggested by the title, I've noticed in the most recent version of PieFed that the "bring it on" option for Trump and Musk news doesn't quite work...if you select that option, then you are asked on every login whether or not you would like to filter out Trump/Musk news, it only actually stops asking you if you select an option that applies a filter. If you apply no filter at all, you're asked if you'd like to apply one on every login. This is different behaviour from previous versions so I just assumed that it was an unintentional change!

Edit: Okay, so I tried to reproduce this while I was putting together a bug report, and it's no longer doing it when I was following my "steps to reproduce". I re-added .ml to my domain filter list, and can still resolve posts to c/Books which has a link to .ml in its description. So maybe it was just a glitch? I'm gonna play around with it and see before submitting it as a bug. But I do know before I removed .ml from that list yesterday, it refused to because of the link in the description (none of the test posts hit on that domain) and consistently said Domain is blocked. :sigh:

I'm really loving PieFed but there's one nagging thing that's making it tough to fully switch over from Lemmy. I post a lot of news articles. The autofill works great but there are many news sites that fail every time -- CBC, Tyee, The Atlantic, NYT, WaPo are a few examples (probably cloudflare issues). You can copy-paste the headline and subheading but no-go for the image. Lemmy solved this by having a separate field to either upload or link to a image. As it stands, probably ~40% of the articles I'd post just look bad in the feed without a possible fix. It'd be great to have a similar feature to resolve it.

The onboarding will offer you a lot of topics to sign up to. These contain communities in them. The idea is to populate subscription feeds, however it can leave some users with a lot of undesired subscriptions if they click too many.

I guess being new here I need to understand some things a bit better. Someone tagged my first post as an ad. I honestly don't understand why, since it stated reasons to move from mainstream social media to more ethical and meaningful platforms. Whew, where have those five years gone?

So I am trying to get a blog running on my VPS, and I already managed to use WordPress for that, but I really would like something a bit more basic. I also managed to get writefreely running and was not impressed with that (unlike WP it basically just pushed a single link post into the fediverse and didn't allow any further interactions). Plume doesn't seem to be developed anymore. Is there any other app for single-users that allows federation?
