Is anyone aware of a good open source app blocking app for Mac?

Here and there are posts about tailwind losing its revenue stream. And then people / post authors conclude open source is lost and spread FUD.

Scenario: you'd like to post to a community. The post would contain some funny satire related to the community topic. Some communities accept this and they state it in their description (sidebar). But it isn't clear whether that's OK for the community you want to post to. What to do?

Are there any projects associated with Lemmy to create (1) a signal/messenger- (2) teams/zoom -like functionality?

I really enjoy retro aesthetics , especially the Frutiger Aero style. I'm also really interested in old macOS Aqua 's design language and Y2K aesthetics.

I tried finding a FOSS app that I could use to use my phone as a mouse (all options for this seem really shady IMO) and Google's "AI overview" recommended the app "Bluetooth Keyboard & Mouse". Seemingly, because it has a (mostly empty) Git repo with typical folders. I tried entering the search term into Copilot on my work computer and got the same result, Copilot also gave a little speech on why the app was FOSS. Only when told there was no source code in the repo did Copilot backtrack and say it wasn't open source (and later having it listed as not recommended because of an unknown origin [eventhough it's in the Google Play store...]).

Hello! I currently maintain a small/medium-small open source project. I know I have some active users. It's been fun, but I no longer feel like I can properly maintain it. I've been considering two options: archive the project or transfer the ownership to someone else.

As suggested by the title, I've noticed in the most recent version of PieFed that the "bring it on" option for Trump and Musk news doesn't quite work...if you select that option, then you are asked on every login whether or not you would like to filter out Trump/Musk news, it only actually stops asking you if you select an option that applies a filter. If you apply no filter at all, you're asked if you'd like to apply one on every login. This is different behaviour from previous versions so I just assumed that it was an unintentional change!

Edit: Okay, so I tried to reproduce this while I was putting together a bug report, and it's no longer doing it when I was following my "steps to reproduce". I re-added .ml to my domain filter list, and can still resolve posts to c/Books which has a link to .ml in its description. So maybe it was just a glitch? I'm gonna play around with it and see before submitting it as a bug. But I do know before I removed .ml from that list yesterday, it refused to because of the link in the description (none of the test posts hit on that domain) and consistently said Domain is blocked. :sigh:

I'm really loving PieFed but there's one nagging thing that's making it tough to fully switch over from Lemmy. I post a lot of news articles. The autofill works great but there are many news sites that fail every time -- CBC, Tyee, The Atlantic, NYT, WaPo are a few examples (probably cloudflare issues). You can copy-paste the headline and subheading but no-go for the image. Lemmy solved this by having a separate field to either upload or link to a image. As it stands, probably ~40% of the articles I'd post just look bad in the feed without a possible fix. It'd be great to have a similar feature to resolve it.

Linux distros log a TON about what you're doing by default.

The onboarding will offer you a lot of topics to sign up to. These contain communities in them. The idea is to populate subscription feeds, however it can leave some users with a lot of undesired subscriptions if they click too many.

I guess being new here I need to understand some things a bit better. Someone tagged my first post as an ad. So I am trying to get a blog running on my VPS, and I already managed to use WordPress for that, but I really would like something a bit more basic. I also managed to get writefreely running and was not impressed with that (unlike WP it basically just pushed a single link post into the fediverse and didn't allow any further interactions). Plume doesn't seem to be developed anymore. Is there any other app for single-users that allows federation?

Whats the best alternative in the fediverse to youtube or twitch, what makes it good or not?

Does anyone have any recommendations for a good open source journaling app that can rival Day One? I'm looking for something end-to-end encrypted—I know Day One claims to be E2E, but I'm not sure I trust it. I use Joplin for my general note taking, but It's not really a suitable alternative for journaling.

What was it like for you when you started to get past beginner elo ranges like 800 and higher?

With the help of other users here I have finally been able to get a PieFed instance up and running! I am running 1.5.3 (Docker install) and I've run into one small problem...trying to manually purge deleted posts always redirects to a page indicating that an error has occurred, the post is not purged. I am not sure how I would go about debugging this, but I will certainly provide any additional information that one might need. I appreciate all the help, the best part about the fediverse for me has to be the community! 👍

Some time ago I started replacing all services and apps that I use with FOSS altnernatives. Most of them were easy to replace but some corpo/big-tech apps had ecosystems too advanced to be conveniently replaced. For example, substituting Google Maps on Android (or I guess Apple Maps on iOS) was a bit of a struggle as the most popular FOSS alternative app was OsmAnd. First of all mad respect and huge kudos to OsmAnd team of contributors but for me the UX was overwhelming and too customizable which is probably a huge bonus to power users but IMO that makes it very unlikely to become a large scale alternative to Google maps. Probably other people realized that too and some 6-7 months ago CoMaps was released, a FOSS app that is also based on OpenStreetMap layer but this time with a simplistic and smooth UX/GUI.
