I wonder, if I specialize in fediverse development, would that help me get a job? Is there work in the fediverse?

I think it's likely we will see big platforms (newspapers etc) want to federate their content directly using activitypub. It sounds like a messy task, but if you can specialize in offering clutter-free activitypub support for existing platforms I'm sure there's money to be made.

I mean software development as a whole, probably. Just knowing how to code in a somewhat larger org can open up job opportunities later on.

Fediverse specific....probably not. My cynical side thinks that most lose money/spend much more than we take in from the fediverse. Most projects are just passion projects with very little budget. But dont believe me, try it out! I want to be wrong on this.

Looks like Mastodon have been hiring accountants 😆 https://mastodon.social/@Mastodon/112769333503182077

I'll learn to cook the books!

I'm betting on the Fediverse, just like I did on Reddit all those years ago.

But, you are currently in a hype machine since you are on Lemmy. As someone who develops with ActivityPub now, there is not a big market for it at the moment.

I expect it will grow, especially as identity management standardizes (I'm actually presenting about this at a conference a bit later today), but it will likely take time.

Sentient Loom

Is the conference being livestreamed anywhere?

fmstrat

No, but there will be recordings (ugh, hah). Actually had enough interest from those that missed it that I'm doing the session again tomorrow.

Its interesting, theres a lot of links she references that I was not aware of in the fediverse (and otherwise).

Yeah, for one thing deepl is defo not part of the fediverse.

mesamune [OP]

True. I modified my comment.

Theres a mix of tools that look like they are useful in someway. Or just neat and ive never head of them.

I mean, Deepl is useful, and more accurate than Google Translate — but I'd prefer a libre alternative. Haven't found one yet that hits the mark.

But anyway, that's OT for the Fediverse sub 🙂

mesamune [OP]

If you find out, let me know...or post? Cause ive been looking for something like that for years in the software development side. The most consistent has been google translate...but its not the greatest API and expensive for anything other than corps. Most sites are just looking to make sure they meet requirements, thats it.

Of late I've tried out the Translate You Android app. Not necessarily an endorsement of the app itself, but it offers a selection of 9 translator services, a few of which are libre.

Certainly LibreTranslate and [my bad, it's a GTranslate front-end] Apertium are open source, probably a few more on their list. Give them a try and see which works best for you!

Thank you for your comment – OP here (of the blog post).

**Calckey.world **is a Sharkey instance (a fork of MissKey). I LOVE IT SO MUCH, it's my favorite Fediverse software so far... I'm planning to write about it soon for my blog.

Yeah DeepL is NOT part of the Fediverse - I used it to translate a comment from Portuguese to English. Still my favorite online translator but my husband also uses ChatGPT for those purposes and I've been really impressed by its quality, too.

Loops.video just launched - it's the Fediverse's answer to TikTok by the creator of Pixelfed, FediDB, etc. It's not active yet, for now you can register your username, but Dan has yet to onboard users. I believe he said he needs to upgrade to a new server because of all the sign-ups.

Linux phone: yeah, I cannot wait to build one. Definitely my goal for next year - as well as a Linux computer :)

Pixelfed?
