Renaming the Lemmy "Karma" system to "Social Credit Score"

submitted by Teknevra edited

Is it just me, or does anyone else think that Lemmy should consider potentially renaming the "Karma" system to "Social Credit Score"?

This playful nod to the concept of social credit in China and other countries could serve as an ironic commentary on surveillance and governance, resonating with users familiar with global critiques of social credit systems.

Reasoning:
1. Cultural Relevance: This name change could spark discussions about social justice, governance, and global inequality while attracting attention to Lemmy's stance on leftist values. 2. Humour: It introduces a layer of satire that aligns with the platform's ethos, making interactions more engaging. 3. Memorability: A unique name like "Social Credit Score" could enhance brand identity, making the platform stand out in digital discussions.

Adopting "Social Credit Score" instead of "Karma" could add depth and humor to user interactions, reflecting Lemmy's political leanings while encouraging critical conversations.

No, because people will take it seriously and we don't want that.

AbouBenAdhem

Am I missing something, or does karma (as a cumulative per-user measure) not play any functional role in Lemmy anyway?

Welcome to Lemmy, where the comments are made up and the points don’t matter

catloaf

You are correct.

Sometimes I think it should, like on reddit where if you got downvoted too much it would rate-limit you.

reflecting Lemmy's political leanings

I'm not here for that at all., and I tend to block anyone who makes their political ideology their entire identity. Can we not just be people talking to other people about cool stuff and leave the political ideology at the door? Geesh!

Like, I don't want this place to be a lefty circlejerk any more than I want it to be a rightwing circle jerk. Not everything has to have a political angle to it.

I also refuse to let .ml set the tone for the entirety of Lemmy.

Jumuta

yeah political circlejerks are annoying whichever side of the political spectrum it's on tbh

circlejerks for the software freedom spectrum however...

Kit

Do you have a moment to discuss our lord and savior, FOSS?

Sorry if I’m wrong, but your post reads suspiciously like it was written by ChatGPT.

Teknevra

No, i wrote it.

Sounds like something an AI would say... /j

Damn, you caught me

Tbh tho some of the sentences sound soooo AI generated:

I've had the same suspicion in another (now deleted) post 5days ago. Also had the same interaction. Said it sounds like ChatGPT, they replied and said no, I'm writing it. (I'm paraphrasing.)

Plus this is now their seventh post in this community within a week. Advertising some random ramblings about the Fediverse. And then not engaging with the discussion.

OP is a caught liar /srs

FundMECFS

My bad then. I very much associate bolded bullet points with LLMs. :)

spujb

no hate but i don’t believe you. i came to the comments to say exactly what @FundMECFS@slrpnk.net said. returns 70% ai on quillbot.com along with my own personal experience that no human uses “resonating” “add depth” “playful nod” “spark discussions” as much as I have seen ChatGPT use those phrases. other patterns include stringing together nouns in ways that sound smart but don’t add value, eg “surveillance and governance” “social justice… and global inequality”

…it’s okay to use ai? but no need to lie about it. goodness knows the internet is already too full of people lying about ai produced content, don’t join them lol

macniel

Since when does that score is called Karma?!

Also obvious AI Slop is AI.

schnurrito

Lemmy has a karma system? Where?

(It's a troll post anyway, isn't it.)

Bezier

It used to. I think it still technically exists in the database, but is unused. Good riddance, really.

realcaseyrollins

NGL I'd love it if that term was customizable by each server admin. Definitely funny, but not sure that it belongs in vanilla Lemmy.

It's cool but no SCS/karma is even better.

Hal-5700X

Good shit post.

aciDC14

Ew, no.

sunzu2

Fuck that that... Just use credit score to determine whose opinion is worthy!

comfy

The fact that Lemmy doesn't calculate and show a user's total post score is proof itself that it doesn't reflect Lemmy's political leanings.
