A Reddit post promoting the Fediverse that actually gained traction (and Reddit deleted the top comment for promoting Lemmy)

I haven't seen Reddit give so much attention to the Fediverse in a long time. Maybe we can help them and answer some questions.

It made me make an account here. I also convinced the group chat to move to signal last night.

Lost_My_Mind

Hey, can you go to /r/Cleveland, and convince them all to move to /c/Cleveland?

And /r/ClevelandGuardians to move to !clevelandguardians@fanaticus.social?

Welcome, pal!

grrgyle

Same! It was two groups and I didn't actually have to convince anyone. It turned out we all had Signal all along, but were binding eachother to stay on WhatsApp, I dunno, through some weird ass inertia I guess.

omg the top comment just got deleted with over 500 upvotes

I think it was when it was edited to include specific links to Lemmy instances, instead of the join-lemmy.org website

I still see the comment on Spaduf's profile, but it shows as deleted in the post

I think maybe the link to lemmy.world is what triggered their filter? because that was edited in

spaduf

Gotta be. It was right after I made the edit.

Die4Ever [OP] , edited

actually I think it was mander.xyz for some reason? and it doesn't seem to happen in r/fediverse

no wait, something else is also doing it, midwest.social is also doing it, lemmy.world is clear, infosec.pub is clear, ttrpg.network is not allowed

no idea how Reddit or r/technology chose which instances to ban lol

prole

Knowing reddit moderators, they probably just encountered someone from those instances that disagreed with them that one time.

spaduf

Wild. Do we know if there's anything else on the list.

RandomVideos

A word block-list isnt that rare

imaqtpie , edited

Reddit is scared. Good job getting the screenshot.

Blaze (he/him)

Oh crap

RandomVideos

Is 500 upvotes that much on reddit?

On lemmy its huge, but on reddit i have seen posts with twice that in niche subreddits

Die4Ever [OP]

For a comment it's a lot yea, especially since the thread was still pretty new. It was the top comment in that thread by a large margin.

imaqtpie

Let's fucking go, this is great to see! Remember to be nice to the new users if you see them around.

katy ✨

Reddit took action faster about Lemmy than they did responding to the epidemic of CSAM subs.

pivot_root

That sounds right for the company whose CEO was appointed moderator of r/jailbait. This was before you had to accept an invitation to be moderator, but fuck Spez regardless.

AtariDump

paschko_mato

How can you look more alien than Zuckerberg?

phlegmy

He was the inspiration for reddit's logo

x0chi

No, the logo is cute

MothmanDelorian

I left reddit because they kept resisting the removal of subs that directly used the platform to sell CSAM under the guise of a specific niche of porn which normally is legal. Direct contact with reddit to explain why it was CSAM went nowhere.

Blaze (he/him)

Welcome here!

andros_rex

Reddit *currently* has an active and massive beastiality sub. They don’t allow real images, but they have comment threads with discussion and advice. Just as with r/jailbait, people post fishing for the real stuff.

JaggedRobotPubes

I bet the fediverse wouldn't censor a post about reddit because the fediverse isn't a bitch.

Amanduh

People here censor all kinds of shit they don't like lmao

grrgyle

Mods!! This one, right here. Thanks

Ulrich

Would if I could but I deleted my account and Reddit has been blocking my connection for months anyway.

Glasgow

They block cookies comrad.

unalivejoy

old.reddit.com always works for me, even for posts or communities which they force you to log in and/or use the app to view.

Was reading through the thread and holy shit I swear half the comments are anti fediverse propaganda.

I wonder how long till the post gets removed.

Edit: would it be immoral for me to mass bot the thread with AI powered pro fediverse propaganda?

3dmvr

they got me with the propoganda forsure, it seemed complicated was actually super simple, every comment will act like its so hard to swap over or signup when once you do look it up you immediately see why its better at its core

Captain Aggravated

I never played WoW or anything like that, but aren't there several WoW servers and you have to decide which one to be on when you start the game? People managed that.

sudneo

Yep, and it's not even fully federated. Different servers have also quite a bit different focus.

I will steal from now on WoW comparison when talking about the fediverse!

3dmvr

explaining the fediverse would be you join different servers but can still play together?

Captain Aggravated

I still prefer the email analogy with explaining how it works. The WoW analogy is for the people who say "That's too complicated for the unwashed masses to understand." People have been signing up for World of Warcraft going on three decades now, I think they'll figure out lemmy.world vs sh.itjust.works.

imaqtpie

Aside from what Blaze mentioned, that's also not really the kind of publicity that we want. Better to just respond to individual users and encourage them to try Lemmy out.

pivot_root

We should really avoid antromorphizing non-humans. Call them bots, like most of them probably are.

paraphrand

In some spaces, that term is becoming really dehumanizing. People use “bot” to label anything they disagree with.

pivot_root

Sure, but I was being literal. A non-negligible number of those comments are likely being automated.

imaqtpie

I'm quite certain that reddit has millions of bot accounts that repost old content and leverage AI to make human sounding comments. They serve two purposes, to simulate activity and interaction, and to disrupt discussions that reddit doesn't approve of, such as those about Lemmy or certain political issues.

Why wouldn't they? It's a very simple decision for them, they need to protect their money and the shareholders money, and they'll do whatever they have to in order to accomplish that objective.

Die4Ever [OP] , edited

Was reading through the thread and holy shit I swear half the comments are anti fediverse propaganda.

Some comments are suspiciously skeptical. If they were this skeptical before joining then they never would've joined Reddit lol. Someone just tried to tell me that the report button on Lemmy doesn't do anything.

https://old.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/1i6rp3o/decentralized_social_media_is_the_only/m8i99k6/?context=9

And people talking about bots too lol Reddit will literally repost a 1 year old post with identical title and copy-paste the top 100 comments from the original too, talk about bots! And they aren't labeled as bots! At least bots here are labeled and you can hide them all instantly.

And then they ask for extreme details on how everything works and try to become a master at it before even signing up. Is that how they signed up for Reddit and Discord? I doubt it.

No way these people were that closed-minded and stubborn when they were signing up for Reddit.

Druid

People are scared of new things and grow complacent once they find their place in a community or on an app, in this case. It's the same reason people will argue to death about needing Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, whatever, and not leave any of them

Blaze (he/him)

would it be immoral for me to mass bot the thread with AI powered pro fediverse propaganda?

You can try, but you'll probably get flagged

U would be surprised what u can do with an account list a proxy list and a tor connection.

3dmvr

why not, ik a lot of ppl are upset with reddit rnow and they prob think lemmy isnt ready, I thought it was bad because of old preconceptions and I never heard about it on reddit, only after I got banned from reddit did I even see that lemmy still existed, had a userbase, and was running without issues now

3dmvr

They also make you think lemmy is like voat or other right wing stuff when the user base here is more like reddit when it was good, far less controversial

Blaze (he/him) , edited

Welcome here, feel free if you have any questions!

A few pointers - !newcommunities@lemmy.world - !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca

3dmvr , edited

The worst part of browsing reddit imo, you cant block a subreddit, you downvote posts, it shows up more, no way to hide it from any feed, my subscribed feed showed me tons of subs not relevant to me that I wasn't subbed to after they made the api changes and got rid of the other apps. It felt like they wanted me to open the app and be upset about something everyday when I was just trying to look at what I was subscribed to. (3d, animation, edm, etc. not subbed to any of the main subs, would still see them)

3dmvr , edited

I really do hope the fediverse takes off, its what I thought the internet would be like when I first got an email and used it as a kid, its wild to me that it's even possible, an actual interconnected network

cm0002

*Doo itttt*

cm0002

Ah, a worthy reason to dust off the ol account

MelonYellow

Yep! I'm on there right now directing people to Lemmy

Lost_My_Mind

Hey, can you go to /r/Cleveland, and convince them all to move to /c/Cleveland?

And /r/ClevelandGuardians to move to !clevelandguardians@fanaticus.social?

MelonYellow , edited

Just threw in a link in both subs for anybody interested in getting off Reddit:)

Lost_My_Mind

HAZZAH! Maybe soon we can talk baseball in the guardians community (and how Jose Rameriez is our baseball lord!), and talk about Tim Misney's eyebrows in the Cleveland community.

You KNOW what I do! *eyebrows*

And to anyone reading this NOT from Cleveland, and have no idea what I'm talking about....

*eyebrows intensify*

Blaze (he/him)

Just saw your comments there, quite funny

cm0002

Lol thanks I try

Blaze (he/him)

@spaduf@slrpnk.net , could you maybe edit your comment to something like

"Lemmy has 42k monthly active users

Feel free if you have any questions"

join-lemmy isn't the best for user onboarding: https://lemmy.world/post/24220536?scrollToComments=true

also what's the best alternative for Mastodon? a lot of people there already tried Mastodon and didn't like it due to UX/UI issues

I would be good to list Mastodon as well as an alternative, and also listing Mbin might be good too? but then maybe you're putting too many choices lol

corsicanguppy

didn't like it due to UX/UI issues

That's my biggest beef. But I think maybe it's "ugly like a Mazda truck", as in, it's plain and weird until you get to driving it and then it's just simple and great.

That's my hope anyway.

Kichae

Misskey's probably the most polished feeling, though under the hood it's apparently a total mess.

spaduf

Honestly I think the answer is BlueSky. For all the problems that people have with it, it's going to be much more successful in getting people off the Nazi platforms. What's more X->BlueSky->Mastodon seems easier than X->Mastodon for most people.

Blaze (he/him)

Agreed

yessikg

I like Sharkey

paraphrand

Hell yeah, Voyager. 🤘

Excrubulent , edited

Hey, question about Voyager, I'm using it, and if I'm on my main feed and hit the back button, it opens a list of subs, and there seems to be nothing I can do to get back to the feed without refreshing it. It's veru frustrating because I keep losing track of the post I was just about to tap on. Do you know anything about this?

paraphrand , edited

If I’m understanding you correctly, you are talking about how the Home feed, All feed, etc does not save your scroll position when you leave them. When you go to the top level of the app.

I think this is because the app always refreshes the current state/order of the feed when you return to it. I looked around the settings and I don’t see an option for this.

This sounds like a feature request. It seems like a grace period would do the trick.

I'd make an issue on GitHub or maybe a post on https://lemmy.world/c/voyagerapp about it.

One thought tho, have you tried swipe gestures to go back and forth instead of your back button? It's difficult to accidentally go back twice when swiping. In case you've never done it, try swiping from outside the screen in.

I know it's not for everyone. And apologies if I'm over explaining swiping.

Excrubulent , edited

Not just a grace period, but opening the sub selection menu, I can no longer just close it and return to the view I already had. That view can stick around indefinitely if you enter a post and then back out of it, the posts you had before will remain. There will be no refresh. But when you press back one more time and open that menu, the only way back to the home feed is to select it, which will refresh it. The app has the ability to not refresh, but not in that very specific circumstance. Like literally just a button to close the menu would do the trick I think.

But thanks for the information. This one issue has made me consider switching several times.

pelespirit , edited

I would help, but I honestly don't have the password anymore. I don't think I signed up with an email, but if I did it was a dummy one. I wish I could help.

Edit: Also, I didn't know about this bridge for Mastodon:

if you want your Mastodon posts to also show on Bluesky then use this bridge https://fed.brid.gy/ you only need to follow the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy ( It is not a typo. It will follow you back and make sure to accept the follow) and it will automatically bridge you

Die4Ever [OP]

the bridge is pretty nice, I would recommend everyone on compatible platforms to use it (Bluesky, and probably any AP microblogging platform, but I've only tried it with Mastodon)

pelespirit

Do you know how I connect Pixelfed to Mastodon too? Or is it automatic and I just do search maybe?

Die4Ever [OP]

yea it should just be a matter of searching your username, but you need to be logged in to search remote instances (they don't want anonymous requests spamming the network)

what's your Pixelfed username? I can pull it up if you want

pelespirit

Thanks for the info, I'll give it a go. It's great that we can link to bluesky but not necessarily be a part of them.

On another note, don't you think it's a little weird that someone from world is saying to not follow small instances? I'm not sure I understand bringing them up in the first place.

Die4Ever [OP]

On another note, don’t you think it’s a little weird that someone from world is saying to not follow small instances?

Where is that comment? I didn't see it. Maybe they're thinking back when it was really hard to get new communities federated, but it's not so bad these days, and even the medium sizes instances already have tons of communities already federated.

anyways I think we should've give people too much trouble as long as they're joining the Fediverse lol, they can move instances as they get a feel for it
